Going out to eat…
This is one on Mom’s favorite stories, and she tells it better than me, but I want to share another Happy Heart Memory.
I can’t remember the occasion, Mom’s birthday I think. I wanted to take her out for her dinner and I did. I asked her to go to dinner at least two days before the event so she could be prepared for the event. I told her to dress up and be ready at 6:00PM (at least I think that was the time).
When the BIG EVENING came I put on my suit and bow tie and my “dress-up” shoes. She was ready on time and asked me where we were going for dinner. I told her to drive and I would tell her where to turn. I rode my bike all over town, (you could do that in the 1950’s), so I thought I knew my way around pretty good. Notice I said “I THOUGHT I KNEW MY WAY AROUND”. Things look different from a car than they do on a bicycle.
It seemed like we drove around a long time. It may have only been a short while, but, I was taking my Mom someplace special and I needed to find it and did not remember where to turn. I think we probably went around every restaurant in town—at least one time.
We drove and drove and drove and drove—-then there, just ahead, it was the best place in town—Tastee Freeze! At least the best place to a young man of 7 or so…..
We got out of the car, Mom in her dress-I in my suit and tie, walking up to the window to order Coney Dogs and Cokes…with French Fries!
That very special evening in a small town in Missouri is a memory I never want to forget. You see-that was my very first time to take a lady to dinner, it was a very pleasant experience, and I got to honor the lady of my life….
This Happy Heart Moment is just another way make myself smile, another good memory to relax with and take away the stress of our faster and more demanding life of these times.
I like to remember when a drive around town, some good conversation, and a Coney Dog, Coke and Fries was a special night out…….that kind of thoughts makes my Happy Heart a Healthy one and that makes me a Happy Heart Folk.
