  • I Can’t Change It-Heart Disease Risk Factors

There are some risk factors I can change, and I need to work on those—my focus should be on those things I can change and not on what I canot change.

Lets look first at what we are unable to change, then we can identify the alterable risk items.

I can’t change the aging process, and I am not sure I want to. They say “youth is wasted on the young” —and, some days I understand the saying—then reality hits, and I realize that I am just the way I am so— I can do what needs to be done today. There are no mistakes, no coincidence, and The mistakes I made are simply an education. In addition, I have fun trying those youthful things now that I am aware of my limitations. I know that I did more things I would not do than I didn’t do things I wish I would have.

I can’t and do not want to change the fact that I am a male. When men and women are the same age—the male has a greater chance of heart attack than the woman. I will not elaborate on this one—I have to sleep at night and my wife reminded me of that.

After menopause the woman ’s risk rises. After this time in a woman’s life she has a greater risk of ardiovascular disease, the risk level is near that of the male.

I cannot change my family history. There is a history of heart ailment in my family, that is a fact I must accept. I still would not change families even if I coud. Te one I have is not perfect—but, it is perfectly suited to me and I am also suited to them. And I want all of my family to know that I love them. (Warts and All)

Last, but not least my race will always be my race. Race is not a preventer of heart ailment; however, there are some races more prone to high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes, all of these items increase the risk of heart disease. At higher risk are African-Americans, American Indians, Mexican-Americans,Native Hawaiians, and some Asian-Americans.

I have listed some of the risks we cannot change. Most of our risk for heart ailment is due to uncontrolled modifiable risk factors. Theidea is to focus on what we can do and not worry about the things we cannot change. I hope you will, like me, do the best you can at leaving the unchangeables to higher hands, and become a hands on HealthyHeartFolk in the areas we can change.
