Aerobic exercise … just what the doctor ordered…
The first words I heard at the cardio-rehab, concerning exercise were not what I wanted to hear. When the nurse said “we will be doing “aerobic exercise” the first thing I thought of was those too skinny girls I saw on TV standing in one place, moving too fast for me to keep up with, and smiling like it was not work, or smiling because they were getting some pleasure from our pain. All I knew was that the more you did the stronger you got and my coach some 40+ years ago said “to get stronger you must hurt NO PAIN NO GAIN!”
I had felt a twinge or two of pain—the doctor said if I felt it again to call immediately and go to the ER, in addition as soon as I arrived I was to tell them in admitting that I had chest pain.
Now some nurse is telling me AEROBIC EXERCISE—heal me in one end of the hospital and hurt me in another –the Funeral Director must be on the HOSPITAL BOARD!
To my pleasant surprise…when I allowed my mind to shut up, and got in listening mode again—I was 200% wrong.
Aerobic Exercise (Dictionary.com) is a moderate type exercise designed t make my body more efficient and my heart and lungs more functional while we tone our muscles. What a relief to know I was not going to run laps, run the stairs, and squat thrust until I couldn’t move. Instead I would walk some laps, step up and step down at a sane and safe pace, and squat thrusts would be replaed with streches and Bodyastics.
All of these things we can continue at home after the insurance runs out. So we are on our way to being HealthyHeartFolks…Aerobic Skinny people who absolutely love life.
