This is the day we give thanks for all the blessings we have in our lives. We spend time with those we care about and if we can’t be with the ones we love, we say thanks that they are in our lives. On this day we are blessed to have one another, to be here on this earth and to share this experience called life. There are many things I have taken for granted in my time here, and I did not realize the extent of my thoughtlessness until I realized that this time on earth was growing shorter.

I learned that each of us is unique, but, none of us is so important we cannot be replaced. I learned that lesson in the late 60’s while living and working in a country far away from here. At this time of year I think of the many men and women in our armed forces willing to give so that we might be able to enjoy the freedom to feel the gratitude, and to express it openly. To them— my greatest symbol of respect … the Hand Salute. Thank you for working on this…..and every other Holiday to give us the opportunity to enjoy the festivities. One of my greatest blessings was to be allowed to serve this country, those who have served, and are serving, know the gratitude I feel.

I am thankful to have been given the opportunty to be educated. While I did not reach the levels of education I could have (looking back I wish I would have)— I did have the opportunity. We may not take for granted the coach, the speech and drama teacher, the math teacher or any other individual who touched our lives, but, do we take for granted the opportunity? I have, and I am not proud to admit it. The real success of my educators is that I am not too proud to admit it. The educators of my day did not just teach, they guided and directed—while I did not learn the lessons right away—I have learned them— and….. I still am learning them. I do feel gratitude for the teaching and the learning…the good and the tough lessons are each good in their own way.

I am most grateful to be in a land that allows me the freedom to worship and develop a relationship with God in my own way. Learning daily who I am, learning who and what God does not want me to be, and asking each day for the guidance and strength to be the person He would have me be. That is the basic freedom that motivated the Pilgrims to leave the comfort of the known for the unknown. The motivation to establish a new land was based on the loss of the freedom to have God…each in his (or her) own way. Would we go so far as they did to protect, to nurture, and to develop the freedom to have God? Or are we taking for granted the freedom….. to have freedom?

Each of us must answer the question in his own way, and to his own satisfaction. I have the answer for me, and I hope this will help you to gain the answers of your own.

Thank you for reading our blog, and have a healthy and happy HealthyHeartFolks Thanksgiving.
