Heart Disease Weight Loss Step Seven
Roy & Heidi Mercder’s HealthyHeart Shopping Stop
EXERCISE—EXERCISE—EXERCISE is step seven. The benefits of exercise are far too many to mention in one article. There are some basic benefits of exercising to weight loss that need to be mentioned so we know how exercise basicly show how exercise works.
First…. exercise burns calories. No matter what I have heard of or tried the only weight loss system that has ever worked for me is to burn more calories than I take in. Exercise does that… it burns calories.
Remember in the first or second article I mentioned walking—it still works today. A regular walking program that is above and beyond the walking we do at work is a great way to start. The best for me has been to do a little bit at a time and build up to a regular amount of walking.
Second…it builds muscle. Muscle is the burner that uses the fuel and is proportionate to metabolism. Metabolism is the rate we burn calories and more muscle burns more calories. Exercise builds muscle and the cycle goes on….more exercise=more muscle=higher metabolism=faster rate of calorie burn, so less calories+more muscle =less fat.
One thing to remember is that muscle weighs more than fat, so when we build muscle… we may initially show a weight gain. Weight gained from building muscle is less harmful than weight gain from fat. To check the muscle fat ratio we use Body Mass Index.
